Effectiveness of primary surgical skill workshop in postgraduate surgery and allied trainees

Abstract
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of primary surgical skills workshop (PSS) in a group of postgraduate surgical residents.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad after a PSS workshop delivered to postgraduate surgical trainees from March 2018 to February 2019. It included 107 participants. The workshop contents were designed by the CPSP and SZABMU for their postgraduate trainees. A 5-point Likert scale and Objective questionnaire Structured Assessment of Technical knowledge were used prior and after the course. And 10 point questionnaire was used to assess the basic surgical skill.
Results: Out of 107 participants, 42 (39.3%) were male and most were in 2nd year as a trainee (67.3%). The average response of male and female was almost the same regarding the improvement in their surgical skills (p=0.327). The response was significantly different regarding improvement in their knowledge of surgical skills (p=0.047). The 2nd year-trainees responded more positively as compared to the 1st year-trainees.
Conclusion: Surgical skills of the postgraduate surgical residents improved significantly after attending PSSs workshop.
