Quality of life and its correlation with the social support among patients with transurethral resection of prostate in public and private sector hospitals of Peshawar, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To assess the quality of life and determine its correlation with the social support among patients with Transurathral Resection of Prostate (TURP) in public and private sector hospitals of Peshawar.
Methodology: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in tertiary care hospitals and included 350 TURP patients through aconvenient sampling technique. We used EORTC QLQ-PR 25 and MSSSP questionnaires. Factors were analyzed including physical activities, urinary functions, bowel habits, sexual functions, comfort and psychosocial activities.
Results: The study had 350 male participants with mean age of 64.12 years (range 48-86), 98% being of more than 50 years. We found that 60% showed that they maintained their daily routines, while 58% agreed that there was moderate support from the family during the disease process and 81% showed low support from their friends. Chi-square test indicated no correlation between the quality of life and social support (p=0.954).
Conclusion: Transurethral Resection of Prostate gland has multiple challenges as well as severe complications affecting someone quality of life physically, mentally, socially and economically.
