Abstract
Objective: To determine the difference in serum lipid profile among controlled type II diabetes mellitus patients using oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted from July to December 2019 at Department of Medicine, Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, Sindh. Patients of either gender, age ranging from 25 to 65 years, suffering from type-II diabetes mellitus over one year, and having a controlled level of fasting and random blood sugar were included. Blood sample for triglyceride, Low-Density Lipoproteins, and High-Density Lipoproteins levels was analyzed. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 22.
Results: A total of 240 patients were included. Mean age of patients was 50.42+6.83 years, 52.5% were male. Most (57%) patients were using oral hypoglycemic drugs. A statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in serum lipid profile of type II diabetes mellitus patients was seen in insulin therapy compared with those on oral hypoglycemic drugs.
Conclusion: Type-II diabetes mellitus patient using oral hypoglycemic drugs showed better results in the reduction of serum triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein levels in comparison with those on insulin therapy.

Key words: Type II diabetes mellitus, Insulin therapy, oral hypoglycemic drugs, lipid profile.
