Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the role of Internal assessment as a predictor of academic performance in the end of session summative assessment in the subject of anatomy.
Methodology: This cross-sectional analytical study included 297 Undergraduate medical students of 1st year MBBS from academic sessions 2017-2018 & 2018-2019. StudentsÂ’ score sheet of internal assessment and marks obtained in 1st professional examination were obtained from students records. Internal assessment score was compared with the score obtained during their 1st professional examination.
Results: There was a linear correlation between Internal Assessment scores and 1st professional examination scores and it was found to be statistically significant (r2 = 0.635, p=0.000) in the subject of Anatomy.
Conclusion: Continuous internal assessment throughout the academic year can predict performance in the end of session summative assessment. By modifying internal assessment with proper remedial measures can not only promote learning but can also improve performance of students in the end of session summative assessment.
