Abstract
Objective: To determine the survival rate of premature babies admitted at a tertiary care hospital of Bahawalpur.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was piloted at the neonatology department of Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur from August 2019 to January 2021. A total of 130 premature babies of both the gender were included in the study.
Results: The overall survival rate of premature babies was 71.53% while the death rate was 28.46%. Lowest survival rate was observed in extremely pre-mature babies (38.46%) followed by very pre-mature (63.23%) and moderate pre-mature infants (91.83%). There was no baby in extremely Low birth weight (ELBW) <600g category. The severe Low birth weight (SLBW: 600-900 g) had 41 (87.5 %) deaths and 2 (12.5 %) survivors out of 16 infants. The Very low birth weight (VLBW: 901-1500 g) had 22 (64.70%) survivors and 12 (35.29%) deaths out of 34 infants. Percentage of survival for Low birth weight (LBW: 1501-2500 g) and Normal birth weight (>2500 g) were respectively 82.60% and 91.17% while the death rate was 17.39% and 8.82%, respectively.
Conclusion: Survival rate of pre-mature babies was high than death rate. To reduce the risk of prematurity, health policy makers and gynecologists should focus on it seriously. This will reduce the death rate of premature babies.

Key words: Survival, premature, birth weight, health policy maker.
