Assessment of frequency of metabolic syndrome among obese patients

Abstract
Objective: To assess frequency of metabolic syndrome.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Department of Medicine, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad from 8th May to 8th Nov 2019. Detailed history was taken regarding disease. Examination of the patient was done and BMI, blood pressure and waist circumference was recorded. After an overnight fast of at least 8 hours venous blood was sent to Ayub Teaching Hospital laboratory for fasting glucose level, C-reactive protein and lipid profile. Patient was declared as Normal or having metabolic syndrome after combining all the results of History, examination and investigations.
Results: Out of 145 patients, 25 (17.2%) were below 40 years of age and 120 (82.8%) above 40 years of age. There were 90 (62.1%) males and 55 (37.9%) females. Means were 49.68+11.552, 104.77+1.291, 158.55+13 ,41.15+6.506 for age, waist circumference, LDL and HDL, respectively. Twenty (13.8%) patients had family history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 43 (29.7%) had impaired fasting glucose. As per criteria, 43 (29.7%) obese patients had metabolic syndrome.
Conclusion: Nearly 29% diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, strongly suggestive of rapid increase of CVDs in at risk group.
