Abstract
Objective: To determine status of iron deficiency amongst children with febrile seizures (FS).
Methodology: This comparative case control study was conducted from June 2019 to June 2020 at Children Department of Fauji Foundation Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan. A total of 180 patients were included, 90 in Group-1 with FS and 90 in Group-2 without FS. Hemoglobin, serum ferritin level and mean corpuscular volume were measured in all patients.
Results: In the Group-1, mean age was 24.22+1.35 months whereas in Group-2, mean age was 23.91+1.22months (p=0.1078). In Group-1, the mean hemoglobin (Hb) level, MCV level and serum ferritin level were significantly low in comparison to Group-2 (p<0.0001). A total of 53 (29.44%) children had iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In Group-1, IDA was observed in 36 (40.0%) patients while it was seen in 17 (18.89%) children in Group-2 (p=0.0019).
Conclusion: There was a strong association between IDA and febrile seizures. In comparison to children having no febrile seizures, significantly lower hemoglobin, MCV and serum ferritin level were observed in children with febrile seizures.

Key words: Iron deficiency anemia, febrile seizures, serum ferritin.
