Impact of an educational intervention on nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding preoperative care: A quasi-experimental study from Sudan

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured educational intervention on nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding preoperative care at a tertiary hospital in Sudan.
Methodology: This quasi-experimental, single-group pre–post design included 130 surgical nurses at Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan, from October 2022 and July 2023. The intervention comprised nine one-hour lectures and twelve three-hour practical sessions over three months. Data were collected using a validated knowledge questionnaire (8 items; Cronbach’s α=0.78; CVI=0.85) and an observational checklist (29 items; inter-rater κ=0.82). The data were analyzed using paired t-tests; binary practice items were analyzed using McNemar’s test with Bonferroni correction.
Results: Pre-intervention, 86.9% of nurses had low knowledge (mean 1.87±0.48), and all 29 practice items showed low compliance (<70%). Post-intervention, moderate knowledge rose to 88% (mean 1.10±0.06; t=26.3, p<0.001, Cohen’s d=2.25), with 86.2% of practice items achieving high performance (≥90%) and 13.8% reaching moderate levels. All improvements were statistically significant after Bonferroni correction (p<0.0017).
Conclusion: A structured educational intervention significantly enhanced preoperative nursing knowledge and practice. These findings support the institutionalization of competency-based training to improve surgical safety in resource-limited settings.
