Evaluation of clinical factors and radiological findings responsible for revision endoscopic sinus surgery

Eishal Arshad, Beenish Nadeem, Naushaba Malik.

Abstract
Objectives: To determines the prevalence of revision endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and measures the frequency of potential factors responsible for it in a single health center.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 100 patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). We sought which patients underwent a repeat surgery, and performed Pearson’s chi-squared test to determine disease and anatomical factors as identified on CT scan predicted the need for revision.
Results: Out of 100 patients, 30% had revision endoscopic sinus surgery. Factors that predict a need for revision surgery were asthma, sphenoid sinus disease, synechiae and anatomical factors such as middle meatal stenosis and deviated nasal septum which were statistically significant (p≤ 0.05).
Conclusion: A good surgical technique and postoperative care with a meticulous insight on CT scan findings are essential to reduce disease recurrence after FESS.

Key words: Nasal polyps, CT scan, sinusitis, mycoses.
