Analysis of impact of extracurricular activities on academic performance of MBBS and BDS students

Abstract
Objectives: To assess the impact of indulgence in extracurricular activities on the academic performance of MBBS and BDS undergraduate students.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Bahria University Medical & Dental College, Karachi from September 2020 to February 2021 and included 248 subjects. A structured questionnaire was designed on the Google form. The link of the form was shared among the MBBS and BDS students via email, messages and What’s App. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 23.
Results: Out of 248 students, 87 (34.9 %) were male and 161 (64.7%) females. Participants residing at home were 159 (64%), and residing at hostel were 89 (36%). Majority (115; 46.2%). were involved in only one extracurricular activity. There was remarkable association between involvement in extracurricular activities and participants’ academic performance (p=0.000).
Conclusions: This study revealed a linkage between the participation in extracurricular activities and academic performance. Participation in the extracurricular activities develops self-confidence that shapes the students to be skilled in inter-personal, communication, social and analyzing skills.
