Abstract
Objective: To assess the proportion of postpartum depression (PPD) and its association with pre and post-natal iron supplementation among women of reproductive age.
Methodology: This analytical cross -sectional study was carried out from January 2018 to August 2019 in Pakistan Air Force (PAF) hospital, Islamabad. Data of 93 postpartum women were collected by interview through non probability consecutive sampling. An Urdu translated semi-structured questionnaire was used. Postpartum depression was assessed through Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) with cutoff value of <8. Chi square test and Fisher exact test were used to see the association.
Results: Of the 93 mothers, 74 (79.5%) suffered from varying degree of depression (EPDS≥9 score), and 19 (20.4%) did not have depression (EPDS score <8). None of the participant’s sociodemographic characteristics showed significant association with depression (p>0.05). However, anemia (p=0.008) and antenatal supplementation (p=0.006) showed statistically significant association with postpartum depression.
Conclusion: Strong association was observed between PPD and anemia. So, there is dire need of timely identification and treatment of individuals having propensity of developing anemia and PPD.

Key words: Postpartum depression, iron supplementation, postnatal, prenatal.
