Effects of Maitlands segmental mobilization and general spine mobilization in patients with cervical spondylosis

Abstract
Objectives: To compare the effects of Maitland’s Segmental Mobilization and General Spine Mobilization in cervical spondylosis.
Methodology: This double-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted at Yusra General Hospital, Rehabilitation center, Rawalpindi, that included 30 patients diagnosed with cervical spondylosis aged between 51-59 years and having symptoms exceeding more than a month and limited range of motion for more than two months. Patients were divided into two groups; having equal in number in the control group and intervention group through purposive sampling technique. The control group received Maitland segmental mobilization and the experimental group received Maitland entire spine mobilization. Man Whitney and Wilcoxon tests were used for a group comparison difference for pain, disability, and ROM.
Results: Mean age of these 30 patients was 51.3±8.21 years. A significant difference was found from pre and post-intervention measurements (p<0.01). In the experimental group, the end value comparison also showed a significant difference except flexion (p=0.044).
Conclusion: Patients with cervical spondylosis can be adequately treated with spinal mobilization that could be either segmental or taking total spine mobilization. Maitland mobilization can be effectively used for decreasing pain, and improving the range of motion.
