Sonographic correlation of prostate median lobe enlargement with bladder outlet obstruction

Abstract
Objective: To determine correlation of prostate median lobe enlargement with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO).
Methodology: This analytical cross-sectional study was carried out at Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital and Fazilat Amin Hospital Gujrat and included 260 patients. We used non-probability convenient sampling. Patients of BPH, aged 50-100 years, with Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) ≥7 were included. A convex transducer with 3.5 to 5MHz was used to perform an ultrasound.
Results: Mean age was 68.84±9.60 years (range 50-98). Mean bladder wall thickness was 4.76±1.744 mm (range 3-9.1). Out of 260 patients, 124 (47.7%) were with bladder outlet obstruction, 149 (57.3%) had abnormal prostate volume, and 15 (5.8%) had a prostatic urethral angle in the range of 11-15mm.
Conclusion: Transabdominal ultrasonography is a more precise and less intrusive method of evaluating the prostate and urinary bladder. It can also calculate pre- and post-void residual volume. This study showed a significant correlation between prostate median lobe enlargement and bladder outlet obstruction.
