Uropathogens spectrum and antibiotic susceptibility in sexually active females of age group 20 to 40 years

Abstract
Objective: To find the spectrum of uropathogens and antibiotic susceptibility in sexually active females of age group 20 to 40 Years.
Methodology: This descriptive observational study was done at Departments of Microbiology/Urology, Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, Sialkot, from June to December 2019. A total of 149 females visiting outpatient department aged 20 to 40 years and confirmed diagnosis of UTI were included in the study. Bacterial pathogens were isolated and antibiotic sensitivity was noted.
Results: In a total of 149 females, mean age was 29.39+6.27 years (range 20-40). Escherichia coli were the most common isolated uropathogens, found in 88(59.1%) females, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae in 18(12.1%). For Escherichia coli, highest sensitivity was noted to meropenem (95.3%), imipenem (94.0%), nitrofurantoin (92.2%) and amikacin (90.6%). For Klebsiella pneumoniae, highest sensitivity was noted to imipenem (97.0%), meropenem (96.1%) and fosfomycin (92.1%).
Conclusion: Escherichia coli followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae were the commonest uropathogens involved in the UTIs among females of reproductive age. For Escherichia coli, highest antimicrobial sensitivity was noted to meropenem, imipenem and nitrofurantoin and amikacin. For Klebsiella pneumoniae, highest antimicrobial sensitivity was noted to imipenem, meropenem, fosfomycin and amikacin.
