Factors influencing medical students' reluctance to participate in clinical teaching

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the reasons for participation reluctance and suggest strategies for improvement.
Methodology: This study was conducted via a structured Google Form questionnaire from various MBBS students of different medical colleges of Punjab. The questionnaire covered demographics, education, participation reluctance, reasons, impact on learning, and suggestions. Purposive sampling was employed. SPSS 23 was used to analyse the data.
Results: A total of 120 participants responded, with a mean age of 21.77±1.61 years. The majority were female (59.2%), and most hailed from urban areas (85.8%). Educational background predominantly consisted of F.SC (86.7%), and private sector representation was higher (76.7%). Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in reluctance to participate were observed in relation to MBBS year and previous participation in public forums. The primary reason for reluctance was a lack of confidence in clinical skills. Most students believed that their reluctance could hinder their learning and development to some extent. Recommendations for overcoming reluctance included small group teaching and discussion sessions.
Conclusion: Tailored interventions are crucial for different stages of education. Understanding reluctance and implementing strategies fosters an inclusive learning environment for future healthcare professionals.
