Abstract
Objective: To determine the public knowledge regarding oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) in different parts of the world.
Methodology: A systematic database search (MEDLINE, Google Scholar, EBSCO, ProQuest, and Web of Science) based on peer-reviewed articles published between 2012 and 2022 in the English language was reviewed. PRISMA guidelines and the PICO model were followed for developing a search strategy. The data gathered through standardized screening tools consisted of 391 articles; 41 with full-text analysis.
Result: The review comprised 16 articles that matched the inclusion criteria. The JBI critical appraisal checklist was utilized for risk and bias assessment. The pooled global awareness level across all studies was ranging from 7 to 73.7%. The level varied between different regions.
Conclusion: The public recognition of the specialty of OMFS is rising with time but more effective policies need to be implemented at institutional and governmental levels to educate people to recognize and seek the appropriate health professional for their particular ailment.
