Effect of toddler massage and micronutrients on growth, IGF-1 Levels, and gastrin in stunted toddlers aged 6-24 months in the working area of West Lombok Regency, Indonesia

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of toddler massage and micronutrient powder supplementation (Taburia) on growth, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and gastrin levels in stunted children aged 6-24 months.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design was conducted in three community health centers in West Lombok, Indonesia. A total of 62 stunted children were randomly assigned to four groups: combined baduta massage and Taburia (X1), baduta massage only (X2), Taburia only (X3), and control (X0). Interventions were carried out over 12 weeks. Data were analyzed using univariable statistics, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, paired t-tests, and ANCOVA.
Results: Group X1 showed the highest increase in length-for-age Z-score (Δ=1.59; p<0.001), followed by X2 (Δ=1.36), X0 (Δ=0.87), and X3 (Δ=0.49). A significant increase in IGF-1 was observed in X1 (p=0.028). Gastrin levels decreased in X2, though not significantly. ANCOVA revealed no significant differences between groups in LAZ (F=1.724; p=0.175) and IGF-1 levels (F=2.767; p=0.053), but a significant difference in gastrin levels was found (F3.532; p=0.022).
Conclusion: Combined toddler massage and Taburia supplementation significantly improved growth and IGF-1 levels in stunted children. Toddler massage may affect hormonal regulation and gastrointestinal adaptation, enhancing nutritional outcomes and child development.
