Exploring the frequency of complete atrioventricular heart block in patients with acute myocardial infarction in a tertiary healthcare setting

Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of complete atrioventricular (AV) heart block in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study consisted of 292 patients clinically diagnosed with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) based on clinical evaluation, electrocardiogram (ECG), and cardiac biomarkers (Troponin I/T). Patients with advanced heart failure or renal failure and patients with previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery were excluded. Demographic data were recorded and data analysis was done by using SPSS version 27.0. Chi-square test was performed to evaluate the association between infarction location and complete AV block. p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
Results: Out of 292 patients, males made up 82.5% of the study population. The mean age of the participants was 50.33±6.05 years and the mean chest pain duration was 112.42±45.96 minutes. Inferior infarction was the most common site (42.1%) followed by anterior infarction (37%) and combined infarcts (20.9%). Complete AV block was seen in 4.8% of patients and only in those patients with inferior infarction (11.4%, p<0.001).
Conclusion: Complete AV block was an uncommon but significant complication of AMI, predominantly associated with inferior infarction and older age.
