Challenges faced by laboratory technicians during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan: A cross-sectional study

Abstract
Objective: To examine the challenges experienced by laboratory technicians in Jordan during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on their workload, safety, emotional well-being, and ability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted from February 1 to August 31, 2023, using convenient sampling. A total of 299 Jordanian laboratory technicians completed an online questionnaire that had been assessed for face validity and reliability.
Results: Participants were mostly female (62.2%), with a mean age of 35.1 years, and the majority held a bachelor’s degree (70.6%). We found that 40% reported issues with test availability, 37% faced extended working hours, and 30% struggled with adherence to COVID-19 protocols. Notably, 68.2% experienced high stress levels, and 20% reported inadequate access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Despite these challenges, no significant correlations were found between sociodemographic characteristics and reported difficulties.
Conclusion: Stress and PPE shortages were major concerns, emphasizing the need for proactive support, adequate resources, and stronger protective measures for laboratory personnel in future emergencies.
