Abstract
Objective: To investigate Cu and Zn levels with biochemical parameters as well as to determine their association in non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM).
Methodology: Seventy diabetic patients and 30 healthy participants as control were included. Anthropometric data, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood sugar (FBS) and lipid profile (TG, Cholesterol, HDL-C, and LDL-C) were measured. Serum Cu and Zn were quantified by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Standard statistical procedures were used.
Results: NIDDM patients showed, significant (p<0.05) levels of BMI=30.9±3.0 Kg/m2; FBS=191.0±39.3 mg/dL and SBP/DBP 132.3±9.6 mmHg/105.4±9.6mmHg, respectively. The results revealed significant (p<0.05) increase in TG=197.4±31.4mg/dL; and a significant decrease in HDL-C 38.1±6.7mg/dL concentrations. Serum quantity of Zn (0.56±0.0075 mg/L) were significantly reduced while serum Cu (4.84±0.27 mg/L) quantity were significantly increased (p<0.01) in NIDDM. Serum Cu/Zn ratio (9.102±1.51) was significantly increased (p<0.001) in NIDDM than control participants (2.00±0.42). Moreover, Cu and Zn demonstrated significant negative correlation r= -0.724 (p<0.01) but positive and negative correlation with FBS, respectively.
Conclusion: Irrespective to age, reduced Zn levels and higher Cu levels were seen in NIDDM. These need to be controlled to maintain normal physiological functions in these patients. Higher BP, TG, and lower HDL with hyperglycemia and an imbalance in Cu and Zn concomitantly may lead to cardiovascular complications.

Key words: Cu, Zn, NIDDM, Fasting blood glucose, Triglycerides
