Abstract
Objectives: To determine the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and T2-DM.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study had sample size of 85 patients and was conducted in National Medical Center, Karachi, Pakistan. Diagnosed patients of T2-DM were included while T-1 DM, Gout and other endocrine disorders were excluded. Laboratory parameters analyzed were glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) and Lipid Profile. Weight, height and BMI, waist circumference, waist hip ratio (WHR) and waist height ratio (WHtR) were recorded.
Results: High uric acid frequency was 9.4%. The results of univariate analysis revealed a positive association of SUA with increasing age, male gender, Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL). There was a negative association with BMI, DBP and FBS. No association was found with SBP, Triglycerides (TG) and HbA1C. UHR was negatively correlated with FBS and HbA1C.
Conclusion: High uric acid prevalence of 9.4%, was predominantly in elderly male patients and was not associated with T2-DM. However it could possibly serve as a screening marker for diabetic complications particularly elderly diabetic patients with moderately controlled glycemic index. UHR and WHtR were negatively associated while WHR was significantly associated with glycemic control.

Key words: Diabetes mellitus type 2, hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia, serum uric acid, diabetic complications.
