Estimation of diabetes distress in Type 2 diabetic hospitalized patients with other Comorbidities

Ishtiaq Ahmad, Ashraf.

Abstract
Objective: To estimate the severity of diabetes distress among Type 2 diabetes hospitalized patients with other comorbidities and its correlations with various demographic and clinical factors.
Methodology: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Mardan Medical Complex from May 2023 to December 2024. The study involved a cohort of hospitalized patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Comprehensive data regarding patients’ clinical profiles, including glycemic control, number and type of comorbidities, and demographic information, were recorded. Statistical analysis, the ANOVA one-way analysis of variance, was employed to determine the relationships between diabetes distress and other variables.
Results: The study included 362 diabetic patients with a mean age of 53.73 years, most of whom were male (58.28%) and literate (68.23%). The majority had diabetes for 5-15 years, with common comorbidities including gastrointestinal diseases (13.81%), infectious diseases (10.50%), and myocardial infarction (8.29%). The average blood glucose was 263.74 mg/dL, and HbA1c was 11.23%. Significant emotional, internal personal, regime-related, and physician-related distress was observed. Distress levels were higher in those with poorer glycemic control, and significant associations were found between distress and comorbidities (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The study underscores the critical need for comprehensive diabetes care that extends beyond physiological management to include psychological support, particularly for hospitalized patients with comorbid conditions.

Key words: Diabetes distress, Type 2 diabetes, hospitalization, comorbidities.
