Abstract
Objective: To determine the severity of voice handicap among teachers and comparison of voice handicap in teachers of special education versus mainstream schools.
Methodology: This cross-sectional comparative study using convenience sampling recruited 340 teachers from special education and mainstream setups in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from July to December 2019. Sample included both genders with at least 2 years’ experience. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) was used for data collection. SPSS Version 22 was used for data analysis and t-test was used for comparative analysis with p<0.05 considered significant.
Results: Voice handicap mean score was 20.75±15.96 with majority 247(72.65%) suffering mild voice handicap. A significantly higher (p=0.006) VHI score was present in mainstream teachers (22.73±15.62) compared special education (17.94±16.08) teachers. Similarly, a significantly higher mean score in the domains of physical (p=0.012) and emotion (p=0.002) issues was noted in mainstream teachers. Voice handicap revealed significant association with females’ gender (p=0.035), qualification (p=0.003), medical history (p=0.000), vocal hygiene (p=0.034).
Conclusion: Teachers in mainstream setups face significantly higher level of voice handicap compared to special education teachers.

Key words: Teachers, voice handicap, special education.
