Abstract
Objective: To examine the relationship among prenatal obsessive-compulsive disorder, perceived antenatal care and maternal well-being of pregnant women.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in obstetrics and gynecology wards of different government and private hospitals and clinics of district Gujrat from February to September 2019. Prenatal Obsession Compulsion Scale (POCS) along with demographic sheet was administered to 352 pregnant women, selected by using purposive sampling technique. Pregnant women having prenatal obsessive-compulsive disorder were screened out of 352 and it was found that 203 women exhibited obsessive compulsive symptoms. Patient Expectations and Satisfaction with Prenatal Care (PESPC) instrument was translated from English to Urdu language by forward-backward translation method. On 203 screened pregnant women, research instruments PESPC and SWEMWBS were administered along with re-administration of pOCS.
Results: There was a significant relationship among prenatal obsessive-compulsive disorder, perceived antenatal care and maternal well-being of pregnant women. Prenatal obsessive compulsive disorder (R²= .576, F (1,201) = 272.9, p<0.001) and perceived antenatal care (R²= .898, F (1,201) = 1772.1, p<0.001) were significant predictors of maternal well-being.
Conclusion: Maternal wellbeing was found to be significantly influenced by maternal mental health in terms of prenatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (pOCD) and perceptions about antenatal care services. It is suggested to take initiatives to improve maternal health care system of Pakistan.
