Comparison of perineal tears among patients delivered vaginally in their first ongoing term pregnancies with and without episiotomy

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of perineal tears among patients delivered vaginally in their first ongoing term pregnancies with and without episiotomy.
Methodology: This Randomized Controlled Trial was carried out at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Imran Idrees Teaching Hospital, Sialkot from 1st January 2023 to 30th June 2023. WE included 120 females from labor room. They were randomly divided in two groups. In group 1, patients underwent vaginal delivery with episiotomy. In group 2, they underwent vaginal delivery without episiotomy. During delivery, vaginal examination was done to assess the presence of all degrees of perineal tears.
Results: Mean age of females in Groups 1 was 27.55±3.37 years and in Group 2 it was 27.58±3.29 years. We found that 43.33% in Group 1 and 23.33% in Group 2 had perineal tears whereas 56.67% in Group 1 and 76.67% in Group 2 had no perineal tears (p=0.02).
Conclusion: Women in their first pregnancies, during term vaginal birth, the rate of perineal tears was considerably greater in those undergoing episiotomy than no such incision.
