Screening time induce asthenopia among screenagers of Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences, Quetta, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To determine frequency and association of asthenopia among screenagers of QIMS.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences from April 2023 to September 2023. Sample size of 336 was calculated by WHO calculator. Participants, who experienced any combination of three out of the nine listed symptoms, including tired eyes, headache, glare, blurred vision, backache, eye strain, sore eyes, shoulder and neck ache, and dry eyes, were identified as having asthenopia. Chi-Square test was applied to check the association between gender and screen time with Asthenopia. p<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Out of 336 participants, 274 (73.5%) were males and 89 (26.5%) females. The most common finding was headache reported by 176 (52.4%) followed by tired eye 132 (39.3%), blurred vision 131 (39.0%), backache 127 (37.8%), neck ache 112 (33.3%), eye strain 107 (31.8%), dry eye 72 (21.4%), sore eye 50 (14.9%) and glare discomfort reported by 40 (11.9%) participants. There was a statistically significant relationship between gender (p<0.0001) and screen time (p<0.0001) with asthenopia.
Conclusion: Asthenopia was found among almost half of the study participants with varying degree of severity of symptoms. Association of screen hours with asthenopia was also established which was statistically significant.
