Emotional intelligence and empathy among allied eye care workers; A cross-sectional survey

Abstract
Objective: To study the emotional intelligence and empathy in Allied eye care workers.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences, Lahore, from 1st July to 30th October 2022. A google form was developed, which included Schutte’s scale and Davis Interpersonal index questions in addition to those related to basic demographic information. The proforma was sent via social media application (WhatsApp) to study participants. Allied eye care workers i.e optometrists, orthoptists and investigative oculists holding at least a bachelor’s degree were included in study. A total of 100 Allied eye care workers were invited to participate, out of whom 69 responded. Comparison of emotional intelligence scores base upon gender, level of education, work experience and job designation were done by applying Mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis test.
Results: Female responders were predominant (73.9%) while majority (69.6%) possessed bachelor’s degree. When compared based upon level of education, level of work experience, job designation and employment type, the sub scale of ‘’outlook’’ showed significant difference (0.024), (0.008), (0.033) (0.008) respectively while other sub scales comparisons showed no significant differences among scores.
Conclusion: Among allied eye care workers, emotional intelligence significantly differs in some subscales when measured according to education level, work experience and job designation.
