Outcomes of surgical intervention in management of chronic pancreatitis

Abstract
Objective: To assess the outcomes of surgical intervention in terms of post operative pain and quality of life in management of chronic pancreatitis.
Methodology: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from 20th April 2018 to 28th February 2023. Patients who had failed conservative management were selected for surgical intervention. Sample size was determined to be 60. All Patients were operated by single surgeon in the same center. Follow up was done for development of complications for a period of two months. Postoperative pain was assessed as per M-ANNHEIM severity index.
Results: In total, 60 patients got operated for recurrent abdominal pain episodes. Majority of the patients got relieved symptomatically with relief of pancreatic ductal obstruction after surgery. Postoperative quality of life assessment showed fatiguability, nausea/vomiting and sleep disturbance had significant improvement after surgery.
Conclusion: Surgical treatment was effective and safe in relieving pancreatic ductal obstruction. Quality of life was also significantly improved after surgery.
