A follow-up study of the treatment with tenofovir Vs. adefovir in chronic hepatitis B patients in Indonesia

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate and compare TDF and ADV therapies among patients diagnosed with CHB and examined the outcomes after one-year of treatment.
Methodology: We retrieved the records of CHB patients registered in the Hepatology Clinic in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Indonesia, between January 2010 and December 2018. The diagnosis of CHB was assessed based on the presence of HBsAg for at least six months. After one-year of continuous treatment of TDF 300 mg/day or ADV 10 mg/day continuously for a year, we evaluated the outcomes that were based on the biochemical, improvement of fibrosis and virological status in patients who were either negative or positive HBeAg.
Results: After one-year of therapy, we found significant differences in HBV DNA improvement between TDF and ADV treated patients in HBeAg-positive patients (17/26, 65.4% vs. 5/17, 29.4%; p<0.05) and the median value of TE (kPa) in TDF-treated patients both in the HBeAg-positive and negative groups, showed a significant difference (6.70 kPa vs. 5.80 kPa; p<0.05 and 12.90 kPa vs. 8.10 kPa; p<0.05).
Conclusion: After one-year of therapy, TDF showed more effective results in reducing HBV DNA and showed a significant difference of the median TE (kPa) value compared to ADV.
